Vans

Vans were not at all glamorous vehicles but had a very important role to play in the transportation of goods around the country, especially goods that needed to be kept dry. The following pictures are of Southern Railway PLVs which were re-classified PMVs after nationalisation.

  • 083240
     
    This van is an example of a van built on Order L1191 which featured 6½ in planking - except for a narrow plank half way up the bodyside, and reinforced strapping on the ends and vertical centreline of the bodyside. 083240 had started life as 2138 in November 1942, became DS147 in 1954 and 083240 in 1976. It was then used as a Stores Van by the Signals & Telegraph Department. Photographed at Hastings c.1989.

    This is a photograph of an anonymous example of Order L1191 with the one narrow plank and reinforced strapping. Possibly at Bletchley in the 1970s.

    S1317S was built in 1939 and was one of the last to be built with even planking. It is seen here in traffic in the 1970s at Clapham Junction.

  • DS46957
     
    DS46957 was a 10 ton Standard Covered Van built by the LBSCR. There were two 10T variants, those with wooden underframes and those with steel underframes. DS46957 was one of the wooden underframed variety. It was converted to a Tool Van for use at Newport IoW and the additional (lower) vent on the end was part of the conversion (there was one of these on each end). The wheelbase was 9' 9", length and width were 17' 4" over headstocks whilst they were 7' 8½" wide.

  • PMV 1455
    Air brakes, ETH
    PMV 1455 was an example of the PMVs fitted with air brakes and electric wiring for use on Central Section diesel hauled trains with electric heating. Photographed at Battersea c.1977, this van was built at Wolverton in 1951.
