Shunter's Truck

photograph: Mike Morant collection

A Shunter's Truck captured at Clapham Junction during the "blood & custard" era.

The Shunter's Truck was a small wagon designed to be permanently coupled to a shunting locomotive and used for storing tools and etc., and for the shunter to ride on. Some railways had purpose-built vehicles but the one shown in the above photograph was one of just two, numbers 61322 and 61323, which were converted from old Adams tender frames in 1931. As so often with the Southern Railway, when something was no longer required they would simply find a new use for it!
