Hamble Viaduct carries the Netley to Fareham line over the River Hamble at Bursledon. It was constructed between 1887 and 1889 and comprises six wrought iron, plate-girder spans on pairs of cast iron columns. It is just over 600 feet long overall. The spans are at an angle to each other to accommodate a curve in the track. Unusually, the end spans rest on columns buried into the embankment, rather than brick or masonry abutments. Steel bracing has been added between each pair of columns. Work to renovate and strengthen the bridge, designed by Mott Macdonald and undertaken by May Gurney, won an award at the Historic Bridge and Infrastructure Awards, 2009.
