BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0

photograph: Mike Morant collection

N°76039 photographed at Eastleigh in 1963 whilst carrying a 14A Kentish Town shedplate. Was the engine just visiting, or was it one that had just arrived on the Southern having been displaced from the Midland Region?

Designed at Doncaster and built there and at Horwich, this class of 115 moguls appeared some 19 months after the 75xxx Standard 4 4-6-0 locomotives. Very similar in design, but smaller (despite being longer), they had an axle loading of less than seventeen tons thereby giving them a wide route availability, which made them particularly useful for work on the Southern Region. Being designed with maximum interchangeability with the other BR standard designs facilitated maintenance of these 76xxx locomotives.

The class was widespread around Britain, being found working on all regions except the Western, with the largest allocations being to the Southern and Scottish regions.
