BR Standard Class 3 2-6-2T

Designed at Swindon for light passenger duties with what is virtually a GWR "Nº2" Boiler, the class 3MT tank was for the most part a new engine, though influenced by late LMS design trends. They were useful engines, coming halfway between the 4MT tender and 2MT tank engines for power and axle loading. First introduced to traffic during April 1952, they were the fifth of the British Railways Standard locomotive designs. They were mainly based on the South Wales lines of the Western Region though the Southern Region had a number and some examples were based as far away as Darlington and Wrexham.

Having delivered empty stock from Waterloo to Clapham Junction, Nº82016 and Standard Class 4 2-6-0 Nº76066 are seen passing Queen's Road Battersea on the up Richmond line heading back towards Waterloo, no doubt for another empty stock working, on 29th August 1964.

82028 Nº82028 is seen at Wimborne heading a two-coach train from Brockenhurst to Bournemouth West. This service had been the preserve of push and pull workings using M7 0-4-4Ts for many years and Nº82028 is hauling a former push and pull Maunsell set. Note the lampposts and also the raised lettering on the "Wimborne" Running-In board. Wimborne had an unusually tall signalbox which is just visible in the smoke immediately behind the chimney of the locomotive.

Ten numbers later, and a lot dirtier, Nº82029 is seen on another goods working at Clapham Common, November 1966. In the background is a 2 Hap in rail blue, sporting the double arrow motif..
