Introduced by Bachmann in 1993, BR(S) modellers could be
justifiably pleased with the arrival at long last of a range of 4mm scale ready
to run Bulleid coaches.
The bodyside captures the continuous curve of the prototype well and includes details such as the clips for holding the destination boards on the coach sides. The riveted window frames however appear in the reviewer's opinion to be too prominent. Unfortunately the window glazing is not flush (South Eastern Finecast do manufacture flush glazing packs for these coaches, but from all accounts they are slightly fiddly to fit, and you either like the effect achieved with this method or you don't). The moulded door handles and grab rails are neatly picked out in brass colour paint. The roof nicely represents the canvas style roof with rainstrips, vents and guards' periscopes where appropriate and correctly captures the characteristic Bulleid transition between roof and bodyside with a very shallow gutter The bogies are nicely moulded representations of the SR standard 8-foot steam stock type (the early production models had the tension lock coupling moulded as part of the bogie, but this was later changed to the newer slimline coupling that clips into the bogie). It is also worth noting that these bogies are usefully available as a spare part. However now that Bachmann have excelled themselves with the level of detail on the subsequently introduced MkIs such as close coupling, flush glazing, separate water tank filer pipes / end handrails and finer underframe detail, it does leaves the Bulleid range slightly lacking. Don't forget - third class was abolished in 1956, with the third class stock becoming second class. The Bachmann range comprises of four coach types namely: |

The Bachmann Bulleids are of the variety with the deeper 15" deep sliding vents introduced under British Railways commencing in 1949 as opposed to the Southern Railway built examples which had only 10" deep sliding vents. Note that the SR Diagram numbers refer to the internal layouts and not external detail differences. For pictures of actual Bulleid coaches click here. |

Versions are available in either SR Green (slightly darker version of Malachite) or Crimson and Cream. The Corridor Composite in green has been available either with or without the later applied yellow strip at cantrail level to indicate the first class section as applied after 1963. |

The sets that can be accurately made up from the Bachmann range are sets 80 - 94, 767 - 769 and 830 - 849, although they are also very close to sets 850 - 865 (which had longer water tanks and LMS switchgear on the underframe). |
