Appledore

Appledore signal box opened on the 27th June 1956. The signal box was to a Southern Railway Type 16 design and contained a 37 lever frame. The line between Appledore and Rye was singled on the 30th September 1979. The box closed on the 6th November 1995 and the area is now controlled from Ashford Integrated Electronic Control Centre.

The level crossing was converted to an automatic open crossing (locally monitored), and without barriers whilst the box was still operational. Barriers were added on a later date as part of a national scheme to upgrade most open crossings of this type.

Text from Peter Gibbons.

Appledore Regrettably, this view from 1st July 2003 shows all that remains of the box is the concrete floor, and in addition the gates have been replaced by lifting barriers.

Fast forward to 2007 and the only thing that's changed on the railway is the rolling stock! Instead of the thumpers there are now class 171s (apparently known locally as 'Flymos'). Here unit 71729 is en route to Brighton.
